Katie’s Pizzeria – Creative Combos Abound

October 11, 2011

So, since the Good Pie isn’t one of my faves (see a couple posts down), which pizza purveyors do pass muster you ask?  Well, there are several, and that list definitely includes Katie’s Pizzeria .

The crust is solid.  Would like it a bit crispier, but oh well.  Really, where Katie’s soars is the array of topping combinations.  On my most recent visit, the prosciutto, fig, and goat cheese was a delightful fall-day taste treat.  The fennel sausage, leeks, fontina, and pines nuts has a more ‘traditional’ flavor profile for pizza, but is still very fun.  Craving some salty goodness?  Then the smoked salmon, capers, red onion, and goat cheese (yes, they really like goat cheese) will totally satisfy the sodium beast.  Speck, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, parmigiano and arugula is right in my wheel house (Pi’s version, I suppose, is the CWE pizza).  And if you happen to be there when they are running their lobster/goat cheese special pizza, jump at it.

Oh, and there are two pizzas that I have not had yet that are an absolute must the next time I dine there: (1) roasted chicken, cipolini onions, GARLIC, goat cheese, parmigiano & escarole, and (2) fingerling potatoes, parsnips, pancetta, parmigiano, onion, rosemary.  I mean, come on.  Do those not sound like hearty pizza goodness?   [more of the prosciutto/fig]

Key to mention that not only are their pizzas super fun and flavorful, but they also offer truly terrific salads.  And believe you me, it’s a rare occasion indeed for me to become excited about salads.  I mean, I’ll happily eat them, but I usually don’t crow about them.  Katie’s salads – amazing.  Much like their pizzas, quite creative.  The one below features flash fried and baked artichoke hearts (crispy on the outside, tender on the inside), perfectly crisp asparagus, goat cheese, and pistachios.  And there might have been some lettuce. Props for the selection goes to my mother.  Just an amazing combo.  The salads are big though, so if you want a green bite pre-pizza, find someone to go in on half.

One final note.  Katie’s is in a somewhat unassuming location, nestled in a residential area along Clayton Rd., across from a Schnucks in Richmond Heights.  Once you venture inside, could not be cuter.  Quirky furniture, cool bar (usually with a projector running some bizarre French flick on a side wall), etc., etc.
